The Mental Health in the Early Years (MHITEY) initiative focuses on improving positive mental health throughout the life span by providing the best possible conditions in the early years. It is well established that the first five years of life are critical to healthy development including the promotion of mental health and the prevention of mental illness.
The Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (CIHR-IHDCYH) and funding partners created this initiative to fund implementation science research that contributes new knowledge about evidence-based interventions for young children and their caregivers. Five research teams from across Canada are studying interventions that promote positive socio-emotional development, prevent the development of early childhood mental health issues and/or treat young children living with or at risk for developing mental health issues.
