Enhanced Wellness of Newcomer Children, Youth, and Families
The project aims to address multiple factors that influence the overall mental health of newcomer children, youth and families including risk and protective factors and the social determinants of health. The primary audience for this project is Syrian newcomer children and youth (aged 6-21) in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Interventions are delivered for children and youth, their parents and guardians, and service providers and educational staff. This project provides psychosocial and educational support to children and youth, including through psychosocial groups and one-on-one interventions, and the expansion of a homework program that provides newcomer youth with a safe space to learn, grow and develop academic abilities. Families are also supported through Circle of Security Parenting groups. At the community level, in partnership with other Winnipeg organizations, Making Sense of Trauma training is delivered to service providers and educational professionals and the book Big Feelings Come and Go is available digitally in multiple languages.
