Supporting Transition Resilience of Newcomer Groups (STRONG)
STRONG is a small group intervention developed to promote resilience and reduce psychological distress among newcomer students. Initially developed and piloted in schools, the program aims to promote individual strengths, build skills to make positive choices, and provide a sense of self and belonging. STRONG is a Tier 2 manualized intervention and has two versions: elementary and secondary. Along with the ten weekly group sessions, mental health clinicians facilitate an individual session with each participant to help them process their migration journey narrative. The licensed mental health clinicians (i.e., social workers or psychologists) receive training to implement STRONG with newcomer students in schools.
