Monitoring positive mental health and its determinants in Canada: the development of the Positive Mental Health Surveillance Indicator Framework. Health promotion and chronic disease prevention in Canada: research, policy and practice, 36(1), 1.
This paper describes work done by the Public Health Agency of Canada involving a systematic approach to conceptualization and measurement of positive mental health. Definitions of positive mental health are provided with a framework that includes four ecological levels (individual, family, community and society). Relevant outcome and determinant indicators are explored.
The framework takes a throughout the life course approach with relevance for children and youth. Risk and protective factors for positive mental health are described; the framework may have value for projects in situating their intervention focus within a socio-ecological context.
