Our vision is for youth growing up in our communities to experience wellbeing, sense of belonging and purpose through caring relationships, quality programs, meaningful leadership opportunities, skill development and self-expression.
Planet Youth Nipissing (PYN) was established in 2023 to implement the Icelandic Prevention Model (IPM) in 2 pilot communities within Nipissing District. PYN is dedicated to building healthier communities for children and youth by strengthening protective factors and reducing risk factors to prevent substance-related harms, such as strong family and peer relationships, extracurricular participation, and school engagement. Core activities include data sharing, community collaboration, policy and practice improvements, and continuous evaluation to identify and promote effective strategies. This initiative coordinates a Steering Committee, actively involves community partners and youth, and uses Planet Youth student survey data to shape its activities. Additionally, PYN will create “Community Action Teams” across both communities that will guide local planning and action.

Located in Northeastern Ontario, Nipissing District is a diverse region known for its natural beauty, strong community ties, and cultural heritage. Youth under 19 make up about 20-25% of the population. The district has a significant Indigenous and Francophone population, along with a growing number of newcomers. Community initiatives focus on youth wellbeing, health equity, and economic development, while preserving the district’s rich cultural identity and outdoor recreational opportunities.
